CLARION is a registered Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) under the NGO Coordination Act in 1994 with a mission of enhancing constitutionalism, human rights and good governance in Kenya and elsewhere. This was a period of strict government control aimed at censoring civil society organizations’ operations. Government intolerance during this period resulted in the de-registration of CLARION in 1995. The de-registration was lifted in 1996 following both local and international pressure, and a legal challenge in the law courts. This was after CLARION disseminated its first major publication focusing on corruption. During the period of de-registration, CLARION founded the Research and Civil Awareness Programme [RECAP]. RECAP became a programme of the International Commission of Jurists [ICJ], Kenya Chapter, through legal hosting. CLARION continued to pursue her vision through RECAP. CLARION is member of the Non Governmental Organisations [NGO] Council. Apart from this, CLARION networks and collaborates with many like-minded organisations including Community Based Organisations [CBOs], national and international NGOs as well as various institutions of learning. Specifically, CLARION belongs to a number of networks that include: The Constitution and Reform Education Consortium [CRE-CO], Kenya Human Rights Network [K-HURINET], Human Rights House [HRH], the Citizens' Coalition for Constitutional Change [4Cs], Forum for Legal and Human Rights Education [FLEHURE], and Paralegal Support Network [PASUNE]. CLARION is unique when compared to other NGOs focusing on Human Rights, Constitutionalism and Governance. CLARION specializes in research based on practical needs and analysis of knowledge gaps. CLARION is able to conceptualize problems facing Kenyans and to develop research proposals aimed at researching, disseminating information and developing materials for civic education. CLARION uses materials it has developed for its own civic education programmes and is able to review and improve the materials based on research and engagement of citizens through various forums. The materials developed are used by other civil society organisations in their advocacy work. While there are many organisations engaged in similar activities, very few follow the four-dimensional approach [research, dissemination, development of civic education materials and engagement of citizens] applied by CLARION. CLARION’s current programme is titled Enhancing & Consolidating the Gains of Democratisation in Kenya. In this programme CLARION focuses on three areas: Constitutionalism, Human Rights and Governance. It is registered as a trust. The organization exists to support long-term grass roots action with a clear emphasis on empowering the poor to develop effective strategies for combating poverty and ensuring social justice and equity for all. CREDO Foundation successfully implemented NCEP I in Embu and Meru South Districts in 2001/2002 and NCEP II in 2006/2007. CREDO conducted civic awareness to prepare the communities to present their views to the CKRC as well as disseminating the on goings of the Bomas deliberations through forums and radio programmes with CRECO. It has also helped farmers organize groups that look into other areas of income apart from predominant cash crops. It also runs a community children’s home in Embu to encourage citizens on their obligations to society. The activities of CREDO Foundation are largely in Eastern Province in the Districts of Embu, Meru South, Tharaka, Mbeere and Kirinyaga. The organization was also involved in the concluded KEDOF Programme on election monitoring and observation.
COBADES was founded in 1990, and offers Public Legal and Human Right Education training for teachers and head teachers of primary and secondary schools. COBADES believes that the school system is a strategic target for introducing and encouraging this kind of training as early childhood nd adolescence are good starting points to promote correct and relevant values in the family, school, community and the wider Kenyan society. COBADES collaborates with the Ministry of Education Science and Technology in the in-servicing of both primary and secondary head-teachers and teachers who teach the legal and human rights content infused in the curriculum. In addition, COBADES has included gender and development, human sexuality, HIV/AIDS, constitutional review process, prevention of drug and substance abuse, poverty reduction, leadership, stewardship, accountability, communication skills and effective planning into its training. During the workshops COBADES uses the Psycho-Socio Method of Education (PSM) by Paulo Freire. COBADES success and ability to meet the challenges of its current and future programmes largely depends on the organization’s ability to consolidate currenct activities. PLE (Public Legal and Human Rights Education) has been a major program of COBADES for many years, however in order to strengthen the PLE and Human Rights activities, COBADES has incorporated other programmes into its activities such as; a) HIV/AIDS This it has done by partnering with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, NACADA, Gender Consultants, RECAP, and WOFAK. COBADES has also seen the establishment of law clubs in many schools. This has had a positive impact where communication with Head Teachers and other staff has improved such that issues of concern are discussed and agreements reached without recourse to violent confrontations. For more information on COBADES please write to; Education Centre for Women in Democracy (ECWD) The Education Centre for Women in Democracy (ECWD) was founded as a society on July 22 1993 by women who contested in Kenya’s first multiparty General Elections in 1992, in response to the frustrations caused by women’s absence and exclusion from decision-making positions, and by the lack of vehicular support structures for women seeking such positions. ECWD subsequently registered as a non-profit and non-partisan Non-Governmental Organization for women in politics, public life and decision-making on August 22, 1996. ECWD holds Consultative (Roster) Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN-ECOSOC). The ECWD Secretariat is governed by a 9-member Council of National Directors (CND), elected every five years by its membership in an Annual General Meeting. An Executive Director, appointed by the CND, oversees the day-to-day running of the secretariat and the organization and is an ex-officio member of the CND. The ECWD secretariat is comprised of a team of 23 members of staff based at the Nairobi Office. ECWD activities are carried out among rural and urban communities and at national and regional levels. The activities include, but are not limited to the following. 1. Capacity-building for women leaders and aspirants 2. Women’s human rights education 3. Civic education at community level 4. Community mobilization 5. Training workshops and seminars (e.g. for community-based human rights educators and policy makers) 6. Development and publication of resource materials and awareness creation through the media ECWD works in an inclusive and non-partisan manner with women and communities at local, national and regional level to address political, social economic and governance concerns that affect women. It provides practical assistance and support to women seeking greater decision-making involvement at all levels. It seeks to broaden participation in, and knowledge about political activities by women at all levels by strengthening civic and human rights education and sharpening the focus on issues of national importance. The organization works in 23 districts spread across the 7 provinces of Kenya, and reaches out to all other parts of Kenya through its media programs. Regionally ECWD works with like-minded organizations, institutions and individuals in six countries of the Greater East Africa Regions such as Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. ECWD has its head office in Nairobi where it coordinates and services all its national and regional programmes. ECWD works with a small coordinating team at the headquarters and a broad base of volunteers at the various sites where its programmes are implemented. Since its inception, It has designed and implemented several intervention programmes on the national and regional levels that work in symbiosis to ensure that women develop their leadership capacities and actually take up positions of leadership, decision-making and public life. The organization is different from other numerous civil society organizations in Kenya and elsewhere in that it seeks to create the necessary link to women’s leadership and their decision-making role in public life through human rights approaches. The organization carries out the following programmes: a) Preventive Human Rights Education Programme b) Civic Education for Societal Transformation c) Women in Public Life (WIPL) Programme d) Gender & Governance Programme (GGP) Following the political violence witnessed during the campaigns leading to the 2007 General Elections, there was reported a high rise in gender related violence especially towards women aspirants. In the first phase of its work (1992-98) it focused on monitoring, documenting and publicizing violations of civil and political rights. It also focused on challenging a largely unaccountable executive by attempting to strengthen parliament, the judiciary and other institutions of government. The KHRC played an important role in strengthening the role of civil society in advocating for democratic reforms by leading the way in initiating and carrying forward the constitution-making process. The KHRC gained a high public profile through its resilience in organizing public direct actions that resulted in several of its leading members being arrested and detained. The KHRC's second phase (1999 – 2003) focus on human rights work broadened to incorporate a wide range of economic, social and cultural rights. The KHRC began to engage more intensely with communities in specific locations and/or in specific industries and sectors to facilitate processes aimed at strengthening their capacities to deal with pressing human rights problems in their contexts. Focus was on among others:
In its third phase, Vision 2012: “…. Rooting Human Rights Work in Communities...”, the Kenya Human Rights Commission's goal is to adequately root human rights and democratic values in communities. This will not only enable communities to defend but also claim their rights. This goal was reached after a detailed concept on ‘creating a powerful peoples' human rights movement', research on “enabling people to participate in their governance”, the lessons learnt, best practices and challenges documented during its second and first phases of its work and recommendations from a mid-term evaluation carried out in the year 2001. In achieving Vision 2012, the Kenya Human Rights Commission seeks to address multiple concerns, they include:
KHRC Approach KHRC believes that protection, promotion and enhancement of all human rights for all men and women depends largely on the extent to which human rights and democratic practices are adequately rooted in communities. Using a rights-based approach to organize communities the KHRC aims include:

Currently, UDPK has eighty-six member associations. Four of the eighty-six are National Associations while the remaining are Regional Grassroot groups. The four are; a) Kenya Union of the Blind (KUB) b) Kenya Society of the Physically Handicapped (KSPH) c) Kenya Society for the Mentally Handicapped (KSMH) and the d) Kenya National Association of the Deaf (KNAD) Most of the grassroot-based groups represent all disabilities namely: visually, physically, hearing challenged and mentally handicapped. Vision To realise a barrier-free society where persons with disabilities enjoy equal access to opportunities in all spheres of life. Mission UDPK is a cross disability organization that seeks to unite groups, associations and organizations of disabled persons for purposes of empowering and enhancing their advocacy role. UDPK also aims to undertake programs on public education and awareness, targeted particularly at stereotypes biases and attitudes unfavourable towards the disabled persons. Brief History UDPK was formed in 1989. Between 1989 and 1993, the organization’s activities concentrated on lobbying the government to revise policies whose implementation has had a negative effect on disabled people. UDPK carries out the following programs: Advocacy & Action Program The aim of this program is to have a world where persons with disabilities who are born in free and equal dignity and in rights, lead a meaningful life that utilises their innate potential to the full; for their own benefit and for the society that they live in. The program exists to facilitate the fostering of a united disability front, that will strengthen the voices of persons with disabilities as they strive for full participation and equalisation of opportunities; bearing special regard to gender equity and concerns of children with disabilities towards a life of dignity, integrity and humanity. Achievements of UDPK since 1998 - 1999: Creation of a Disability Caucus, which has brought together over 50 actors (organizations and individuals) in the disability field. Through the participation in the Safari Park talks, the program created political space for persons with disabilities in the political arena. The program played an active part in the nomination process of Hon. Josephine Sinyo to parliament. The political space created with the appointment of Hon. Sinyo to parliament saw the disability movement acquire two commissioners with disabilities into the Constitutional Review Commission. UDPK is in the process of reviewing a Disability Bill that was officially handed to us by the Attorney General to review before presentation to the Cabinet and to parliament for eventual enactment. Advocacy Program UDPK set up the Advocacy Program with the aims of: advancing the human rights and equal opportunities of disabled persons in Kenya, thereby enhancing their quality of life, advocating the implementation of the United Nations Standard Rules on the Equalisation of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities (UNSR), and strengthening and developing the institutional capacity and effectiveness of organisations of disabled persons, including their ability to mobilise resources. The advocacy program also seeks to investigate and evaluate the degree of implementation of the UNSR, and make proposals for subsequent action, develop a strategy for the promotion and implementation of these proposals and related initiatives, collect and analyse data and information on disabled persons and their organisations, encourage co-ordination, co-operation and joint action, particularly with regard to the UNSR, among participating organisations, and identify and generate financial and technical resources for the institutional development of disability organisations. It was founded in 1996 as an independent national youth initiative with the overall mission to redefine the role and contribution of the Kenyan youth in the governance and development processes in the country. Since then significant progress has been made in many areas. Most notable is the increased youth consciousness and sense of pride and the increased visibility of young people occupying leadership positions in various key arenas. Youth Agenda’s Vision Youth Agenda envisages a just and equitable Kenyan society in which young men and women live a full and dignified life. Mission Statement YAA seeks to proactively facilitate a participatory process for young people to assert their roles and visibility in governance and development. Youth Agenda runs the following programmes: 1. Leadership and Training Programmes; that seeks to nurture leadership potential through training for capacity building and creating linkages among young people to be able to contribute significantly in building a culture of democratic leadership, entrenching the practice of good governance, rule of law and constitutionalism. The following projects are implemented under this programme: a)Young Leadership Development Programme(YLDP) b) Political Leadership Programme(PLDP) , a special intervention intended to realize our vision of the Kenya we want by creating a new political leadership culture in Kenya . It's a joint initiative of Youth Agenda and 4Cs in partnership with Friedrich Ebert Foundation. c) Gender and Governance Programme(GGP), that seeks to train and organize the country's young women leadership into a critical mass of change agents and a credible force for influencing the country's strategic directions in both the short and long run. Specifically the programme seeks to strengthen capacity for young women in public office in local governance, political party processes, civic and parliamentary seats. 2. Youth Outreach and Civic Education Programme, which seeks to consolidate the gains of young people in advancing their cause by reaching out to them wherever they are in the different parts of this country and encouraging closer working within and among them. The programme also focuses on Voter Education and Election Monitoring, specifically on voting habits and election violence among the young people. The following projects are under this programme. a) National Civic Education Programme (NCEP), this program was being implemented all over Kenya. NCEP aimed to consolidate a vibrant democratic and political culture in Kenya . It raised awareness in human rights and good governance, and promoted tools for enabling Kenyans to hold their government accountable. b) Voters Education and Electoral Process, YAA undertook Voter Education and Election Monitoring Programmes in 1997 in a select number (20) of constituencies especially those that had youth candidates running for electoral posts. Subsequently, YAA trained monitors who observed elections in these constituencies. c) Outreach Programme; this programme seeks to raise awareness among young people on issues of: Nationhood and nation-building, Constitutions, constitutionalism and constitution-making, State, democracy and democratization, Principles, values and practice of governance. This is mainly done through physical visits, public lectures, publications, mentoring, peer education, Peer support, excursions, etc. 3. Advocacy for Policy and Legal Reforms; through this programme YAA seeks to address this problem through encouraging the policy makers to involve young people more in policy processes, as well as organizing debates that are aimed at making qualitative input into the policy formulation and implementation processes in Kenya. 4. Networking and Collaboration; In this programme YAA seeks to network with progressive organizations that have programmes for young people. The goal here is to engender greater understanding and to create synergy among the young people and the organizations through information exchange, internships, joint programming among others. YAA also offers internship in administrative and programmatic areas. This presents an opportunity for young people to be exposed to a work environment, which also ensures continuity. Gender balance is observed and interns are admitted on merit. YAA also facilitates young people in getting internship opportunities with partner organizations when they are available. Special Projects a) East African Youth Council (EAYCO) YAA facilitated the formation of EAYCO, which provides a basis for greater co-operation in the entire Great Lakes Region and a useful voice for young people in the regional integration efforts. We hope that in time EAYCO initiate discussion and partnership with other initiatives that share in the vision of EAYCO, to be able to bolster the regional and ultimately African, integration. The YAA participated in the 1st East African Youth Forum held in Arusha, Tanzania in 1998, and which proposed the formation of an East African Youth Council (EAYCO) to be accorded status in the East African Co-operation (EAC). YAA, hosted the 2nd East Africa Youth Forum which received, discussed and ratified the draft EAYCO constitution.
